Portugal leads the way in construction in 2024

According to the first estimates released by Eurostat in December, Portugal recorded the highest year-on-year increase (6.9 per cent) in construction output in October and the third highest (4.6 per cent) on a year-on-year basis among European Union member states.

The reference month is October, and according to the EU’s statistical services, construction output rose 0.2 per cent in the Eurozone and fell 0.8 per cent in the 27 member states, compared to the same month in 2023.

Among the member states for which data is available, Romania (-14.5 per cent), Slovenia (-13.4 per cent) and Poland (-11.4 per cent) showed the biggest year-on-year falls, with Portugal (6.9 per cent), Spain (6.3 per cent) and Bulgaria (6.2 per cent) recording the main advances.

Compared to September, Slovakia (7.9 per cent), Austria (6.5 per cent), Portugal and Hungary (4.6 per cent each) showed the biggest increases and Romania (-8.3 per cent) and Poland (-2.7 per cent) the only decreases, concludes Eurostat.
